Yesterday was once month since my GP tested my blood glucose and sent me up to hospital. Today is one month since I was officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. What have I learned?

  • It has been surprisingly easy to give up chocolate, cakes, donuts, and sweet stuff. Since diagnosis I have had something sweet just twice. Once when I had my only hypo, and once when I had had a really busy and active day and I needed something to eat before my Pilates class. I would not have believed you if you told me that it would be this easy.
  • I’m getting used to having breakfast. I’m not a fan, as such, but I feel better when I have breakfast, and one does not want to take one’s morning metformin on an empty stomach.
  • Testing my blood glucose is surprisingly routine now. The first time I did it myself I was nervous. Now, I can do it almost without thinking. Not completely without thinking though. Tried that once, and I managed to miss my finger the first time, and drew way too much blood the second time.
  • Lots of people have type 2 diabetes, or know someone who has.

In a month I have gone from being somewhat terrified to feeling this is all completely routine and under control.
