Before I was diagnosed, I knew one person with diabetes – Belfast Friend. He was the first person I spoke to after my GP sent me up to hospital. Over text, phone, and social media messages he talked to me about being diabetic.
When we took my prescription to the pharmacy, one of the pharmacy technicians told us that they had diabetes too. They talked to me about type 2 diabetes.
When I went to the gym for a Pilates class yesterday, I told a gym friend. “Type 2?” he said “My dad has that. Are you on a pill or injection?”
Hearing that other people have diabetes, especially when it is controlled to the extent it is just one small part of their life, is so empowering, so comforting to me right now.
