The hardest lifestyle change for me was not adjusting my diet. It was not being able to go barefoot. I used to go barefoot all the time at home, but I had to stop that when I was diagnosed. I’ve been wearing my trusty Nike flip-flops at home since I was diagnosed. Sadly, they started to crack the other day, and I take a zero-tolerance approach to footwear issues, so I bought a new pair today. This felt slightly odd. You always remember your first Pride parade, and you always remember your first pair of shoes you got specifically for diabetes. Your second Pride parade is when it starts to become normal, and your second pair of diabetes foot coverings is when it starts to feel normal.
I also got some good news about my medication. Following my most recent HbA1c test (40 mmol/mol) my care team has decided to reduce my metformin from 500 mg twice a day to 500 mg once a day, with breakfast. It felt slightly strange, but good, when I deleted the reminder for the evening dose from my phone. It is going to feel very odd leaving the house tomorrow without a metformin tablet in the pill container attached to my keychain.
