Managing diabetes requires some lifestyle changes. Some are obvious. For example, eating a huge amount of pizza is no longer an appropriate response to having had a long day at work. Some are less obvious.

When I was in hospital, I was told that I shouldn’t go barefoot, even at home. Oddly enough, this has been really difficult for me. I used to spend so much of my life barefoot. Now, the first thing I do when I get out of bed is put flip flops on. I’m still new to diabetes, and I am hoping that a doctor or nurse will tell me that I’m being over cautious and I can go barefoot again. We shall see.

The other big lifestyle change is much harder. For as long as I can remember, I have been involved with LGBT rights in one way or another. That has been extremely rewarding, but also extremely draining. I need to stop doing this, at least for a while. I hope that in the future, I will be able to start this again, but for now I am having to pause my activism.
