When you have diabetes, it is important to look after your feet. This is because if you have high blood glucose levels your feet may loose sensation, making them more susceptible to injury and infection. Diabetes can also make it harder for your feet to heal. Diabetes Ireland has good resources on caring for your feet.
Every day, I inspect my feet for any signs of injury. I wash them, and I moisturise them. I admit I did feel a bit self conscious when I moisturised my feet in the pool changing room for the first time, but only the first time.
Diabetics are supposed to visit a podiatrist every year, and my first podiatrist visit is today. In fact, this post should be going live at about the time I am seeing my podiatrist. I will let you know how it goes.
Edit: just got home from the podiatrist. My feet are in perfect condition, and the podiatrist herself was lovely.
